How to get what you want in life
- Written by Darren Kime
Everybody wants something. Whether it be Money, Cars, Homes, Fame, World Travel, or simply a promotion at work …We all want something.
How many people actually get what they want in life? Of course, many people get some things that they want and perhaps you do as well. But over the course of your life, haven’t you noticed that some rare individuals seem to get nearly everything that they want? Haven’t you noticed that for some people it seems almost effortless to get what they want. Doesn’t it seem like those who are successful tend to stay successful? Doesn’t is seem like those who are not successful tend to continue to struggle?
The Big Difference
What is difference between people who achieve success (those who get what they want in life) and those who do not? Is it luck? A Charmed Life? It comes down to Goals. Anybody who has accomplished great things in life has set clearly defined goals. You would be hard pressed to find any notable, successful person who did not have clear goals. Those who rise from the depths of poverty to the economic stratosphere do so by setting goals.
It seems like I have heard about the importance of settings goals for as long as I can remember. I may have thought that I was setting goals, at times in my life, but I didn’t really understand what was required to achieve them. I never quite had the level of success that I thought I should have. It wasn’t until later in life that I realized just how crucial goals are for getting what one wants in life. Fortunately, I learned some valuable information that has helped me and I believe it can help you as well.
What is a Goal?
So what is a goal? I like to think of a goal as a dream with a deadline. How many times have you, or those around you, seen a fancy car, a beautiful home, a yacht, a person who has achieved fame and fortune and exclaimed; “That’s what I want!” or “I am going to have that some day!”? Most people leave it at that. They become very excited when they see what they want but it is little more than a fleeting wish. It isn’t until you identify what you really want, write it down, and set a deadline that you are actually moving toward getting what you want. Once you truly develop this skill, you will find that the object of your goal is essentially yours the moment that you write it down and begin to think about it.
How to use Goals
Let’s break it down. What is effective goal setting? How should you implement goal setting to attain what you want?
Step 1
The first step is to decide what you really want. Be very specific. It is not enough to say that you want to have a lot of money, for instance. Instead, decide on a specific amount of money and set a deadline for having this money in your possession. For example, “My Goal by February, 15th, 20XX – I have $10,000 in my bank account.”. Of course, goal setting is not strictly for the acquisition of money. It is for acquiring anything that you want in life.
Step 2
The second, and very crucial step, is to write down this goal. Do not type it. Literally use a pen and paper or at least a stylus and tablet and write out your goal or goals. There is something magical about writing out goals. Be sure to write your goal(s) in the present tense. Not “I will have…” but rather “I have”, “I am…”, “I do…”. This may seem like a strange distinction but it is important.
Step 3
The third step is to read and review your goals often. Your goals should be the first things that you read in the morning and the last things that you read before you go to bed. Ideally, you should also read your goals as often as you can throughout the day. When possible, read them out loud. Once you read a goal, say to yourself; “I Can Do This!” or “It IS Possible!”. Keep in mind that you are literally re-programming your sub-conscious mind for success by going through this process. You are also invoking the Law of Attraction. As you read your goal, visualize what your life is like having achieved your goal. How does it feel? What sort of things do you do…now that you have crushed your goal?
The Card
I indicated that you should read your goals as many times a possible throughout the day. A great way to ensure that you do this is to write your goal on a small card and have it laminated. You can normally get cards laminated at your local print shop. If you plan to make use of this technique for multiple goals, you may want to invest in a small home laminator for your convenience. By doing this, you can carry your goal in your pocket or wallet or purse. Anytime that you are bored, standing in line, or cursing your job because it has nothing to do with your goals or interests, simply pull out your Goal Card. Read it and imagine that your goal is already accomplished.
Notebook
In addition to having your goals written on convenient Goal Cards, do this…
Have a dedicated notebook or pad of paper and spend 2 to 10 minutes writing out your ideal life. Again, make sure that you write in the present tense. Do not limit yourself. Let your imagination soar. Each entry might start out with something like…I have an incredible life! My relationship with my (spouse) and kids is wonderful. I live in a beautiful 2 story Georgian Colonial on Maple St. My car is a [insert vehicle of your dreams here]. I earn X dollars per month…etc…
After you have finished this description of your ideal life, write out your current goals beneath. These should be the same goals in the same format as what you put on your goal card.
Do this a minimum of once a day. Ideally, you should do this first thing in the morning and right before going to bed at night. The more often you do this, the more powerful it becomes!
Vision Board
Finally, many people find it helpful to have a Vision Board. Simply purchase inexpensive poster boards at your local “Dollar Store” or craft store. Cut out pictures of what you want and glue or tape those pictures to a board. Include pictures of your dream car(s), your dream home, perhaps a picture of a YouTuber’s award for having 1,000,000 subscribers, perhaps a picture of a person who has the type of physique that you want. It’s your board. Put what you want on it. Make sure that this board is displayed prominently where you will see it often.
Final Thoughts
Do not let your past or your current situation steal from your future. Imagine the life that you want and create it by using the techniques that I have sited.
Focus on what you want! Never focus on what you don’t want! Far too many people focus on what’s wrong with their life, what they don’t have, etc. Focusing on such things will bring more of it into your life. This goes back to the Law of Attraction that I mentioned previously. It can work for you or against you. As a matter of fact, I heard one life coach suggest that negative people who focus on what they don’t want become “Crap Magnets”. Most likely you know somebody like that. Make sure it is not you.
Do not expect something for nothing. Now that you have clearly defined goals, start doing the work that it takes to achieve them. Become the person who is worthy of the things or position that you desire. Increase your education or skill level to mirror that of the people who already have the things that you want. The longer that you focus on your goals the more you will start to get hunches or ideas that will help you. You will start to attract people and things into your life in a way that might almost seem magical. But don’t be lazy. Do the work that is required of you. Remember that convenience and greatness do not go together. People who always want to do things the easy way tend to have a hard life. People who are willing to do the hard things eventually have an easy life.
Disclosure
By the way, I did not create or develop the ideas and techniques that I have shared with you. Most of the information here has been around for decades…if not centuries…or longer. What I have written here is the result of numerous lectures or writings by people who have distinguished themselves in the fields of Business, Philosophy, and Coaching. Much of their content came, no doubt, from studying other great minds of the past. It is only logical that if I hear or read something that I find useful…something that really resonates with me, that it would come out in my own writing. The focus here is on helping others.
If some, or all, of these ideas are new to you, Congratulations. You may be well on your way to greater success than you have ever known.
If, on the other hand, you have been around and a lot of this sounds familiar…that is good too. We can always use positive reinforcement of worthy ideas. Perhaps this will serve as a gentle nudge to resume doing the things that you know you should do…especially if you have been falling short of your ideal lifestyle.
